Snowshoeing in Caucasus


Our journey contains visiting Tbilisi – the capital of Georgia and Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, which is eastern part of Lesser Caucasus and is located in central part of Georgia. We hike through snowy evergreen forests with snowshoes, enjoy spectacular panoramic view of the whole Caucasus from Lomismta and the touristic shelter hidden in snow brings very special, adventurous mood. The other part of the trip takes place in Stepantsminda, where we cross part of the way to Kazbegi (Mkinvartsveri) and see glacier.

Day 1

The first day of the tour takes place in the capital of Georgia – Tbilisi. After wandering through narrow streets and districts of old town, we visit Abanotubani, famous with sulfur bathes. The place is related to the foundation of Tbilisi, as according to the legend, king Vakhtang Gorgasali discovered this place in the 5th century and decided to build a city on this location. During the tour, we also visit ancient Narikala Fortress, Anchiskhati Church of the 6th century, monument of Kartlis Deda (Mother of Georgia) and other sightseeing.

Day 2

Tbilisi – Borjomi
Today we drive towards Borjomi. On our way, we visit Uplistsikhe – the city carved in rock, considered as one of the ancient settlements in Caucasus. After arriving in Borjomi, we have a walk in the park of the town, where we have an opportunity to taste mineral water right out of the spring.

Day 3

Borjomi – Likani – Lomismta Shelter
On a third day of the journey we start hiking towards touristic shelter of Lomismta. On our way, we cross snowy pine dark forests and enjoy panoramic views. In the evening, after arriving in the shelter we light the wood stove and have a dinner.

Day 4

Lomismta Shelter – Lomismta – Likani – Borjomi
Today, we wake up early and start hiking towards the top of mount Lomismta. The place is amazing with 360-degree panoramic view of the whole Caucasus. We visit St. George’s Church and hike down back to the shelter. After a short break, we continue our journey towards village Likani.

Day 5

Borjomi – Stepantsminda
Our trip continues with off-road cars from Borjomi towards Stepantsminda. On our way, we cross famous Georgian Military Road, Gudauri ski resort and Jvari pass. We visit Ananuri Church and Fortress of the 16th century and stop at Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument to enjoy breathtaking views.

Day 6

Stepantsminda – Glacier – Stepantsminda
We start hiking towards the glacier of Mkinvartsveri (Kazbegi) early in the morning, which takes place from the height of 3200 meters above sea level overlooking beautiful and breathtaking views of Stepantsminda. On our way back, we visit Gergeti Trinity Monastery of the 14th century.

Day 7

Stepantsminda – Tbilisi
On the last day of our journey, we drive towards Mtskheta, once the capital of Georgian Kingdom – Iberia, where Christianity became official religion in 337. After visiting Svetitskhoveli Cathedral of the 11th century and Jvari Monastery of the 6th century (UNESCO), we finish our journey in Tbilisi.
